New Initiates are required to keep the big bent in front of the Engineering Department polished.
Use the following calendar to select a date and then email Jerry Nobles (jkn401@jaguar1.usouthal.edu) to sign up.

  • Shining brass is very simple, it only requires time and effort.  Also, once it is cleaned up and shined really well, keeping it that way will be easier.

  • Do NOT under any circumstances use powered tools on the bent nor abrasive cleaners.  Your Aunt Rosie's home concoction of Coca Cola and toothpaste will not work either and may do more harm than good.

  • To remove corrosion that may occur between semesters, use 0000 grade steel wool, Brasso®, and elbow grease.  Wipe the excess residue off with paper towels.  To completely remove the residue and leave the brass with a golden hue use Goop Hand Cleaner then rinse with copious amounts of water.  This will leave the brass unprotected so follow the directions on a can of Brasso for protecting it.

  • For regular shining use Duraglit or Brasso® on a throw-away cotton rag.  The rag will turn black, if you put it in the wash with any other clothes then everything will smell like Brasso® for weeks.  When finished polishing, wipe down the bent with clean paper towels, making sure you remove any fingerprints.  Both Duraglit and Brasso® will leave a protectant film on the brass.

  • Dr. Steadman may have some polishing materials in her office.
