Control Theory Note: A short version of "Numerical Inversion of Laplace Transforms" was submitted to Chemical Engineering Education. Twelve months later two negative reviews were returned, and the paper was rejected. One reviewer stated, "Process control instructors have routinely used MATLAB, MATHCAD, CONSYM, etc. to invert Laplace Transforms. Thus, I don't see anything in the paper that instructors don't already know or do." The second reviewer said, "Students will find it difficult to implement this method without excessive use of computers." In any case, I have used numerical inversion with MAthCAD for a decade to simulate linear control systems. Numerical inversion handles the transition from underdamped to overdamped behavior much more easily than analytical inversion. Experience has shown that it takes only one assignment to introduce students to numerical rather than analytical inversion. This is a very useful technique that is easy to implement. After the student has used Laplace Transforms to model a control system, he or she can easily perform a parameter study using numerical inversion. Anyone is welcome to use these algorithms. IAPWS95.doc is a WORD document describing the functions. Two Example Sets illustrate how to reference IAPWS95.mcd and present several sample calculations.
