Research Interests:

Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment (municipal, industrial, landfill leachate, etc.), stormwater treatment, and watershed management. Biodegradation of complex organic compounds. Water quality management. Recycle and reuse of waste materials in value-added products.

Courses Taught:

CE 271 Introduction to Environmental Engineering
CE 372 Water Quality Analysis
CE 475 Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment
CE 427 Environmental Engineering Design
CE 474 Industrial Waste Treatment

Current Research Projects:

The Alabama Universities/TVA Research Consortium (AUTRC)
"Evaluation of Alternative On-Site wastewater treatment systems for Treatment Efficiency and Cost Effectiveness", Project is monitoring the performance of several alternative on-site wastewater treatment systems (5 wetlands, 5 sand filters) in terms of treatment efficiency and cost to make recommendations to both public and private sector agencies and businesses.

Mobile County Health Department
"On-site sewage management to restore shellfish growing waters", EPA Gulf of Mexico Program demonstration project to design, construct, and evaluate alternative on-site wastewater treatment options (constructed wetlands, sand filters, drip disposal) to help remediate environmentally sensitive coastal water resources, particularly with reference to fecal coliform contamination of shellfish growing waters.

Alabama Department of Public Health
"Performance evaluation of Baldwin County Alternative On-site sewage disposal systems", long-term performance evaluation of 4 constructed wetland systems to provide design criteria and application information to solve small-scale wastewater disposal.

National Science Foundation (EPSCoR)
"Recycle and Reuse of waste blast material from the shipbuilding industry", development and testing of new value-added products (concrete, asphalt, etc.) from waste blast material used in the shipbuilding/repair industry.
